How we research and rank
Every pick is assessed from published specifications, manufacturer documentation, and what long-time brewers report, then matched to your batch size and system type -- because a 10-gallon conical is overkill for a 5-gallon setup, and a plastic bucket is the wrong call for a temperature-sensitive lager.
Who writes these picks
BrewMason is written and maintained by its editorial team. We publish under the BrewMason name rather than a personal byline, because our rankings come from documented research rather than one person's hands-on experience. Where a specification, measurement, or figure appears in a guide, it comes from the manufacturer or a cited source, not from our own bench.
What we score on
Every pick is judged on the same criteria. We weight them by what actually matters for the way you will use the gear, then write up the tradeoffs honestly.
Batch-size fitment
We match each piece of gear to the batch sizes its rated capacity actually handles: 1-gallon small-batch, 5-gallon standard, and 10-gallon large-batch.
System-type compatibility
We read the spec sheet and fitment documentation to note whether a product suits stovetop extract, all-grain stovetop, BIAB, or electric all-in-one brewing so you know it fits your workflow.
Build quality and longevity
Material grade, weld type, and fitting standards taken from manufacturer specifications, weighed against owner reports of how the product holds up after dozens of brew days.
Ease of sanitation
Design features that decide how easily a piece cleans and sanitizes between batches -- ports, welds, seams, and dead space -- read from published specs and long-run owner reports.
Value
Price weighed against documented build quality and the service life brewers report over repeated brew cycles.
How our picks work
Each category roundup is ranked by our editorial score. The highest-scored option carries the Top Pick badge. Separately, the option that delivers the most for the money carries the Best Value badge. They are often different products on purpose: the best-scored is not always the smartest buy for most people, and we tell you which is which.
What we never do
- We take no payment, free product, or sponsorship in exchange for coverage or a ranking. There are no paid placements.
- We do not claim to have tested a product we have not tested, and we do not publish reviews under the name of a person who does not exist.
- We say what is wrong with a product, not just what is right. Every pick lists real tradeoffs.
- We match recommendations to your situation (fitment, skill level, budget, and use case) instead of pushing one product on everyone.
- Prices and specifications change. Always confirm the current price and fitment on the retailer's page before buying.
